African countries need critical mass of geo-information science and technology experts to drive their rapid development through appropriate and responsible use of geospatial information. The Regional Centre for Training in Aerospace Surveys (RECTAS) was established in 1972 under the auspices of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) as an educational “one-stop” solution institution that trains highly skilled manpower in the science and technology of geospatial information. RECTAS is located within the campus of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria. Its programmes are designed to extend the frontiers of education and scientific research in Geographic Information Science fields (photogrammetry and remote sensing, geographic information systems, and cartography) to enhance the benefits derived from the technology in various disciplines; decision making and good governance in member states of RECTAS in particular and African nations in general.

Suitably qualified candidates are invited to apply for admission into the following
academic programmes. All programmes commence on 1st October each year.
Academic Programmes
1- TD (Technologist diploma) in Geo-information production and management. Duration is 18 months (available in English and French).
2- PM (Professional Masters) in Geoinformation production and management. Duration is 12 months (available in English and French).
3- EM (Executive Masters) in Geoinformation production and management. A weekend (part-time) programme. Duration is 18 months (English only).
4- M.Tech. in Geo-information Technology (offered in collaboration with Federal University of Technology, Akure, Nigeria) but students are domicile at RECTAS. Duration is 18 months (English only).
5- MSc. in Geoinformation Science (offered in collaboration with University of Abomey-Calavi, Republic of Benin) but students are domicile at RECTAS). Duration is 18 months (French only).
6- MSc in Cartography and Geoinformation Science. Duration is 18months (available in English and French).
7- PhD in (a) Geoinformation Science. (b) Cartography & Geo-visualisation. Duration 2-4 years (available in English and French).

Admission Requirements
Only candidates with National Diploma (ND), Technician’s Diploma, Higher National Diploma (HND), Technologist Diploma (TD), Bachelor Degree (BSc. BA), Postgraduate Diploma (PGD), Professional Masters (PM), Master of Science (MSc), Master of Art (MA) or other Higher Degrees in science, Social Science, Humanities, Engineering, and Health disciplines are eligible for consideration for admission.
Method of Application
Application forms can be submitted in any of the following three ways:
A- Online application: Complete the form online at rectas_programs.htm
- Scan and attach evidence of payment of application fee of $100 or N15,000.
- Scan and attach relevant qualifications and support documents.
B- Down load and print out the application form. Complete the form and enclose the necessary documents (receipt of payment of application fee, photocopy of certificates, etc). Then scan the form and documents and e-mail them to the Director of Studies.
C- Obtain the application form from RECTAS and complete it. Attach the necessary documents and submit or post it to the Director of Studies.
Note: Candidate applying for masters or PhD programme should submit with the application form a 1 page A4 size, single space and 12 pts format proposal of the expected focus of study or research. Each candidate may be invited for interview to explain the proposal, funding and other requirements before admission is granted.

Fellowships
RECTAS provides international standard education, training and research with state-of-art digital facilities and laboratories and hands-on practical training in a serene and comfortable classroom and students’ accommodation that is highly conducive for learning and research. In order to be eligible for RECTAS fellowship a prospective candidate is encouraged to obtain nomination from his/her country’s Respective member in RECTAS Governing Council (Benin, Burkina, Cameroon, Ghana, Mali, Niger, Nigeria and Senegal). Fellowship covers tuition accommodation, feeding stipend and other allowances.
Candidates can also seek support, scholarships and fellowships from national and international organisations such as State Governments and Departments, Ministries and agencies, Educational Trust Fund (ETF), Petroleum Trust Development Fund (PTDF), Shell or other oil companies, UNDP, DFID, IFRA, UNESCO, Ford Foundation, etc.
- Students not on fellowship or scholarship will pay tuition, health, book and other fees; and arrange their private accommodation and feeding.
- RECTAS has training,, academic and research linkages with ITC, Univ. of Twente, Netherlands; Clark University, USA; Oregon State Univ. USA; ESRI, USA; Univ. of Ghana, Legon-Ghana; Geospatial World, India & RCMRD, Kenya.
